Marcia Barrett, one of the original vocalists with the prominent pop vocal group, Boney M visits Maldives on April 24, to perform in the show scheduled to be held on April 26 at Dharubaaruge.

The long-anticipated and much publicised Boney M concert finally rocked Malé, the capital city of the Maldives, on Monday night.

Originally scheduled to be held on April 14, the concert was first postponed and then cancelled before the Government stepped in announced an entirely new show featuring the lead vocalist from Boney M's original lineup, Marcia Barrett. Tickets for the show were sold for Rf 1,000 (seated) and Rf 200 (standing) and from last night's turnout it was evident that BoneyM wasn't just popular among those who had first heard the disco group's songs in the 70s and 80s. The Rannabandeyri Maalam (Main Hall) at Dharubaaruge was packed with young men and women who had bought the cheaper Rf 200 tickets, while the back row seats were taken by older fans.
The stage was designed to resemble a 70s disco and the setting worked, transporting the audience to a different time and place that most of them had only seen in old movies or music videos. The show began at 9.30pm and the opening act was performed by popular local singer Mariyam Unoosha. She received a hearty response from the crowd but it was when Marcia Barrett began her performance that the crowd really went wild.
"Daddy Cool", "Brown Girl in the Ring", "By the Rivers of Babylon"; Marcia performed hit after hit song, her voice apparently unchanged despite her years and the crowd danced and sang along with her. Marcia had earlier said that it would be impossible to perform all the favourites and hits from Boney M but she somehow managed to squeeze most of them into the time allocated for the show.
"I had never heard of Boney M before the news was announced that she was performing in Malé," one young girl at the concert said. "But after listening to some of their songs I knew I had to see them perform. I had a great time. The music was fantastic!"
An older fan said that he had never imagined that he would ever get to see Boney M perform live in Malé.
"I was a huge fan when I was a teenager," he said. "The closest thing we had was some of the local bands performing Boney M songs at Olympus or at other stage shows. I never thought I would actually get to see them perform here. It was also fun to see all the young kids discovering and appreciating our generation's music. Clearly, there is no generation gap where music is concerned."
